Dear fellow string player

Are you a classical player who wishes you could play the pop and contemporary music you love?

Sure, Beethoven, Bach & Brahms are wonderful, but how about the other B's?

Beyoncé, Billie Eilish, Bruno Mars?

And what about Black Sabbath, B.B. King and Billie Holiday?

Or The Beatles, Bruce Springsteen and the Bee Gees?

There is a lot of great music out there besides what they taught me at Juilliard!

If you, like me, love playing your instrument you probably also love all kinds of music. Not just classical, but rock, jazz, fiddle and more.

But if someone asked you to play a jazz tune, you might have to say "I don't really know how to play jazz."

And it's intimidating to see TikToks and Instagram reels of incredible string players who have mastered those styles, but when you pick up your bow to try them, it doesn't sound (or feel) natural!

I know how that feels because I've been there myself!

I spent years figuring it out. I like to joke that it took me years to forget everything they taught me at Juilliard.

When all is said and done, you just want to have some fun on your instrument playing the music you enjoy listening to, music that is relevant to you and your friends and part of the musical culture that we live in, not just from hundreds of years ago.

Oh, and the icing on the cake would be if you could see results in as little as one week!

If this sounds at all like you, then I'd like to invite you to take...

The Strum Bowing Groove Challenge!

The Strum Bowing Groove Challenge makes it easy for you to learn a battle-tested technique that enables you to play groove-based music in all genres. Rock, Pop, Fiddle, Jazz, Hip-Hop, EDM, Latin, you name it!

Your Challenge Questions Answered!

What is the Strum Bowing Groove Challenge?

The Strum Bowing Groove Challenge is a free, comprehensive program designed to introduce musicians to the techniques of Strum Bowing, helping them expand their musical vocabulary across various styles like rock, jazz, and classical music. Led by Tracy Silverman, this challenge is structured to enhance your string playing skills through innovative methods.

Does it Matter When I start?

No, you can start at any time. Students are all at different lessons in the course, depending on when they started. We will guide you through the lessons, a few a week, but you are encouraged to keep moving forward as fast as you like--the more lessons you complete, the more likely you are to win the $20 Gift Certificates.

How do the prizes work in the Strum Bowing Challenge?

Throughout the Strum Bowing Challenge, we keep track of the number of lessons each participant completes. At the end of each week, we publish a leaderboard showcasing the progress of all participants involved. The top musician on the leaderboard — the one who has completed the most lessons — is awarded the gift certificate as recognition for their hard work and dedication. This system is designed to motivate you and encourage some friendly competition within the community, making the learning process even more exciting and rewarding. Prizes are intended to enable you to further enhance your musical journey, so stay tuned each week to see who's on top of the leaderboard and find out what you could win!

Who can participate in the Strum Bowing Challenge?

Musicians of all levels who play string instruments are welcome to join the Strum Bowing Groove Challenge. Whether you're a beginner looking to explore new playing styles or an experienced player aiming to refine your technique, this challenge has something for everyone.

Do I need a specific type of string instrument to participate?

No, the Strum Bowing Challenge is designed for all string instruments. While examples may focus on the violin, the techniques and principles can be applied to viola, cello, bass, and other bowed stringed instruments. Electrics and acoustics, if it has strings and a bow, you're good to go!

Do I need a subscription to participate in the Strum Bowing Groove Challenge?

Yes, participation in the Strum Bowing Challenge requires an active subscription to the Strum Bowing Groove Academy, which is $9 per month. However, when you sign up for the challenge, you'll receive a free 30-day trial of the subscription, giving you full access to the challenge and all the video courses, books, play-alongs in the Strum Bowing Groove Academy digital library.
